Materia Gris | Grey Matter
Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes 2023
The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is pleased to present the exhibition Materia Gris, by Nicolás Franco. Composed of unpublished pieces that connect with the MNBA collection, the works address the genre of painting to highlight the cyclical and secular interactions present in our visual history. The group of works thematizes concepts such as time, chance, change, creation and destruction to review, within an abstract and minimalist matrix, the way in which reality and history are materially processed as an image.
For Materia Gris, Franco used photographs of works from the museum’s collection - paintings, sculptures, ornaments, documents, press. Each matrix, meticulously recorded, has been fixed on thick aluminum panels by means of a chemical reaction produced by the contact of various types of acid with the metal. This process serves as the starting point for a series of immense paintings up to eight meters wide that combine highly complex industrial processes with subtle artisanal interventions.
